Permanent Collections

Permanent

Permanent exhibits include: Monumento a Morelos; Casa de Virreyes o Casa del Real Desagüe; Capilla de San Juan; Osamenta de mamut (Mammuthus columbi). The monument to Morelos, located outside the building, was designed and ordered to be inaugurated in 1910 as part of the Centenary celebrations of Mexican Independence by General Porfirio Díaz, but with the Revolutionary movement underway; it opened in 1912 during Francisco I. Madero's presidency on December 22, at the Morelos death anniversary ceremony, maintaining the 1910 design. The Casa de Virreyes or Casa del Real Desagüe served functional governmental purposes; the central patio features a circular pond that in the 19th century supplied water to the department and adjacent houses; the patio de carretas borders the west side with the cart room and stables (where a Berlina cart, formerly the property of the Inspección General de Monumentos Artísticos e Históricos – predecessor of INAH, is exhibited). The current ground floor houses the permanent Morelos exhibit; the upper floor housed the rooms used for receiving and resting the authorities of the viceroyalty and today are the rooms for temporary exhibitions. Capilla de San Juan, in the property's rear garden, was built in the 18th century; today used for concerts, temporary exhibitions, conferences and workshops. The mammoth remains (Mammuthus columbi) was found in the Ejidos de San Cristóbal neighborhood in April 1995; the remains were moved to Casa de Morelos for restoration and display; restoration completed in 2010 and the exhibition hall opened in early 2011. The mounting structure is notable for preserving each bone and allowing assembly/disassembly without harming the bones, ensuring visual harmony between the structure and the fossils.
