The earliest inhabitants of Soledad de Maciel were groups of farmers who established a stratified society capable of building foundations and hydraulic engineering works. The area has been inhabited since the Preclassic period (2500 BC to 200 AD). During the Classic, Teotihuacan culture influenced the city and the great ceremonial Xihuacan was constructed. The society reached its peak during the Epiclassic (650–959 AD). The site reached its height during that period and controlled trade in the area. Its grand ceremonial center became a site of agricultural and religious rites, and a seat of regional power. The area was gradually abandoned due to floods that forced inhabitants to migrate to higher lands.
