The museum is divided into six thematic cores: In the first room, beginning in 1850 with the founding of Noj Kaaj Santa Cruz Báalam Naj, 'Gran pueblo de la Santa Cruz, la casa de los que están en guardia,' as a sacred place of Maya rebels, their heritage and unwavering pursuit of autonomy during the so-called Caste War, a period that propelled the creation of Quintana Roo as a sovereign state of the federation, fifty years ago. The second room narrates how, after peace was sealed, the rubber boom transformed community organization through ejidos and cooperatives, enabling negotiation of rubber price extracted from chicozapote with foreign companies that benefited from demand during the two World Wars. The third section, through images, traces that in 1932, when the city was renamed Felipe Carrillo Puerto, rural federal schools arrived in the region with a socialist approach and more inclusive policies, promoting technical and agricultural training for community development. In the fourth room, the traditional milpa practices (a cultivation system that yields 29 products, including corn, beans, chili and squash) and beekeeping with the Melipona bee are celebrated, promoting sustainability and reaffirming the Maya cosmovision. Conversely, the same room discusses tourism’s emergence in the Caribbean since the 1970s as an important income source. The fifth room is devoted to art and popular religiosity. Garments and utilitarian objects such as huipiles, basketry, hammocks, and wood carvings, as well as music and dance that visitors can hear and observe through videos and interactive didactic materials, are tangible expressions of Maya culture and spirituality. The last room addresses Santa Cruz, a symbol that guided the macehual struggle for over 50 years, whose cult is celebrated today in the sanctuaries of Xcacal Guardia, Chancah Veracruz, Tulum, Chumpon and Felipe Carrillo Puerto; in that sense, the traditional Maya church encompasses Catholic-origin ceremonies within these temples, as well as the symbolic-military guard system originated in the Caste War, and pre-Hispanic agricultural or forest rituals.
