Permanent Collections
Two permanent exhibition rooms: Sala Quintana Roo (of 940 m²) and Sala Maya (of 740 m²). The first room explores Quintana Roo archaeology from its oldest submerged cave burials to the rise of southern monumental sites and the northern coastal region before the Spanish arrival; it showcases the origin, development, and changes in Maya cities, funerary rites, architectural elements, and domestic and ritual objects spanning two millennia, concluding with a sketch of the conquest, colonial era, and the Caste War of the 19th century. The second room expands on Maya civilization: environment, origins, development and decline of cities; economic activities from agriculture to trade; elites and wars; major cultural expressions such as writing and calendar and some rites like the ball game. The works come from Quintana Roo and other Maya-area states (Tabasco, Yucatán, Campeche, Chiapas); some works are loaned by the Comalcalco Site Museum, Palacio Cantón (Yucatán), Chichén Itzá Site Museum, Chiapas Regional Museum, and Palenque Alberto Ruz L’Huillier Site Museum.
