El Museo Nacional de San Carlos —poseedor de una de las más importantes colecciones de arte occidental de los siglos XVI al XX en América Latina— cuenta con seis salas de exhibición permanente. El acervo se ha enriquecido por medio de adquisiciones, encargos directos a artistas españoles, donaciones, pinturas expropiadas a los conventos suprimidos en el siglo XIX y algunas copias realizadas por alumnas y alumnos de la antigua Academia de San Carlos.
