El recorrido abarca desde los primeros pobladores de la región hasta el movimiento revolucionario, con aspectos de la vida y las costumbres de las etnias que habitan el estado. Además, cuenta con un acervo paleontológico, en el que destacan una osamenta de mamut completa y una colección de fósiles hallados en los alrededores.
Los numerosos vestigios arqueológicos, que incluyen desde puntas de proyectil y utensilios de los primeros pobladores hasta las expresiones artísticas de las culturas del occidente mesoamericano, brindan un panorama del desarrollo cultural de la región. Destaca el acervo etnográfico sobre los pueblos coras y huicholes de la zona. También cuenta con una muestra de pintura de los siglos XVII al XX, que incluye a autores como Echave, Juárez, Rodríguez Juárez, Villalpando, Cabrera, Rivera y el Dr. Atl.
