El espacio se encuentra organizado en tres partes. La primera corresponde a la etapa prehispánica y los primeros asentamientos, el periodo Clásico y el Posclásico, en la cual, entre otros objetos, se muestra una pieza elaborada en barro cocido que representa al Dios Sol; la segunda sección se centra en la historia virreinal de la región; y, finalmente, en 2017, en el marco de la declaratoria del municipio de Yanga como Sitio de Memoria de la Esclavitud y de las Poblaciones Africanas y Afrodescendientes por parte de la UNESCO, se abrió al público la Sala de Afrodescendientes de la Costa del Golfo, la cual aborda la importancia de la figura de Gaspar Yanga, líder de la rebelión de esclavos negros en la región central de Veracruz, cuya consecuencia fue la fundación de la Villa de San Lorenzo de Cerralvo (hoy Yanga), el primer territorio libre de esclavitud en América.
