Museum Exhibitions
Special Exhibitions
Four temporary exhibition rooms: Sala 1 - Presents the Sierra del Nayar project as a joint effort between specialists and local communities; it also places the region in the broad context in which its history should be located, from Toltec-Mesoamerican times to the southeastern United States, offering an approach to the studied space. Sala 2 - Highlights the most notable aspects of the region's ancient inhabitants, the huixtleños; as Mesoamerican colonizers from the south, they were predominantly warriors, and in their worldview war became sacred, akin to the Mexicas' Flower Wars; Sala 3 - The clay figurines and funerary goods show how the huixtleños perceived themselves in life and in death; Sala 4 - The Sierra as a central agent of history: how man inserted himself into the landscape, how he organized his built space, the resources provided by the Sierra's ecological variety, how he drew inspiration from nature to create his images, how he transformed the apparent natural barrier into a life of communication toward the west and the sea and toward the north up to present-day Arizona and New Mexico, and finally how the Sierra served as refuge and cultural resistance against the Spanish conquest. The room ends with the rupture and the arrival of the Zacatecos.
