Cuenta con cuatro salas de exhibición temporales:
Sala 1.- Presenta el proyecto Sierra del Nayar como una empresa conjunta entre los especialistas y las comunidades locales. Presenta también la región en el amplio contexto en el que es
necesario ubicar su historia, desde la mesoamerica tolteca hasta el sureste de los EE:UU. Ofrece un acercamiento al espacio estudiado.
Sala 2.- Presenta los aspectos más notables de la historia de los antiguos habitantes de la región o huistleños. Como colonizadores mesoamericanos procedentes del sur, fueron eminentemente guerreros.
En su cosmovisión, la guerra llegó a ser sagrada, al estilo de las guerras floridas de los mexicas, tal como se manifiesta en las empalizadas de cabezas trofeos y en los cuchillos de sacrificio. Los temas de sus santuarios de arte rupestre y su incorporación en un paisaje utilizado como el escenario natural de mitos de origen, atestiguan como las guerras floridas se inscribieron en una lucha cósmica.
Sala 3.- Las figurillas de barro y los ajuares funerarios nos proporcionan la imagen que los huixtleños se hacían de si mismos, en la vida y en la muerte.
Sala 4.- La sierra como agente central de la historia: como el hombre se insertó en el paisaje, como organizó su espacio construido, los recursos que le proveyó la variedad ecologíca de la sierra, como se inspiró en la naturaleza para crear sus imágenes, como transformó la aparente barrera natural en una vida de comunicación hacia el occidente y el mar y hacia el norte hasta los estados actuales de Arizona y Nuevo México y, finalmente, como la sierra sirvió de refugio y resistencia cultural frente a la conquista española. La sala acaba con la ruptura y la llegada de los zacatecos.
