El MUNAL cuenta con una exposición permanente titulada Recorrido Histórico Artístico, compuesta por 33 salas dispuestas de manera cronológica, desde el siglo XVI hasta mediados del XX.
Los objetos en exhibición se distribuyen en tres secciones: “1550-1821. Asimilación de Occidente” (salas 1-14); “1810-1910. Construcción de una nación” (salas 15-26); y “1910-1955. Estrategias plásticas para un México moderno” (salas 27-33). Adicionalmente, el público puede recorrer las seis salas especiales: exposiciones temporales; monotemáticas; colecciones especiales; orientación; ciclos primavera-verano y otoño-invierno, y gabinetes de estampa y fotografía.
