El museo cuenta con 15 salas permanentes, además de la obra del pintor y escultor zacatecano Pedro Coronel, se exhibe arte universal de distintas épocas con piezas de Egipto, Grecia,
China, Japón, Italia, India, así como de autores como Picasso, Dalí,
Miró, Goya, Chagal y otros.
Alberga la Biblioteca Histórica Elías Amador, que contiene un acervo de más de 20 mil volúmenes de los siglos XVI al XIX y una interesante colección de numismática zacatecana.
